Thought might try to get some activity/discussions started on my new Ganoksin blog! This network is really awesome!
Any way…, I am getting ready to start forming some 18 gauge bezel settings.
Looking at a William Fretz page showing the process. It shows how to solder the inner wall of the bezel with a thinner gauged silver bearing/rim.
Just looking for advice on if using sterling or .999 for that inner rim would make any difference.
I know that the .999 is easier to work with, but if I can save a couple of bucks using sterling then would like to try that.
If it were you, would you use .999 and spend the extra money for ease of forming or would you think that the use of sterling would be just fine?
Also can I figure that about a 24 or 28 gauge for that rim would be ok as far as offering a good lip for the stone to set on?

Hey George.
I’ve actually made step bezels like this before - it’s a challenge!
I would probably use fine silver for the interior step if the stone is small. If the stone is bigger, the metal wont need to bend as much, and sterling should be fine. I’ve used 26 ga. strip for the interior and it works great. 28 ga. might be a little thin…
Good luck! I hope you’ll post pictures when it’s done.
